Choreographic Coaching

Coaching for artists making choreographic and performance work. Supporting the maker in their investigation process and the creative development of the work itself.

These are interactive and enriching sessions that support

• The maker to find clarity in articulating and expressing their ideas

• The process by posing the right questions at the right moments to help you, and the work, move forward

• The communication between choreographer, performers, collaborators, and production team

• The working environment to become one that is positive, fruitful, and effective

• The maker to identify and move through challenges or unblock blockages in the creative process

• The communication of the work by considering the experience of a viewer, audience, or participant

• The maker to create the work they want to create

Choreographic Coaching takes place inside the studio or rehearsal space with a choreographic and dramaturgical focus. It combines methods and approaches from coaching, dramaturgical thinking, and a foundational knowledge of compositional elements and choreographic devices – the selection, use, and implementation of them to realise choreographic intent. Choreographic Coaching supports both the maker in their development and investigation process and the creative development of the work itself.

How does it work?

Wherever you are in your choreographic process, be it the early stages of idea development, right in the midst of creating the work, or coming near to performance, presentation, or completion… I adapt to the needs of both you, the maker, and the process.

In Choreographic Coaching, I integrate and combine my experiences of working as a choreographer, educator of dance composition, and artist coach. I have the ability to set aside and separate my own personal “preferences” when working with other artists and ensure that I am there to support your process and your work. This is something I pride myself on, and have created a framework around, which ensures I support from that place and not from a place of personal preference. Though, if personal preference is something you want to invite into the space, then we can consciously open up that possibility.

The choreographic coaching framework I have developed includes and combines methods, knowledge, and a deep understanding within the areas of

• Compositional elements

• Choreographic devices

• Performative qualities

• Relationship content and development

• Structuring devices and form

• Aural, design, and performative setting

• Working attitude and approaches

• Research and development

• Collaborative skills and values

• Constructive feedback methods

Timing, frequency, location

The timing, frequency, and location of our sessions will be determined and agreed upon by us in advance.

For each session, I recommend a minimum of 2 hours to allow time for the developmental process to take place.

It is possible for me to come to your rehearsal space, or for you to come to my movement studio in Oslo, Norway.

Ahead of our first session, you will be sent an online questionnaire designed to provide an initial opening into you and your creative work. This also helps me to get an idea of what you would like to focus on and gain from our session/s, and how I might best support you in your creative process. Submissions to this form are confidential and will not be shared outside of our coaching partnership.

Experiences…

Anna–Lise worked with us during the creative process of our production “24 hours“, which was to be a puzzle of highly diverse choreographic approaches and expressions. Her ability to dig for everybody’s underlying intentions and to pose the right questions at the right moment within the trustful setting she created helped each one of us more than anything else to bring out his/her best and to reach yet another level in the ongoing artistic strive for meaningful dance and powerful positions. Thus her work was of immense value to all of us, a generous gift and a great pleasure to experience. Thanks a lot, Anna-Lise!

Anna-Lise has an uncanny ability to hold back her personal views and tastes from her choreographic mentorship process and provide sharp, insightful, constructive feedback on how the work could be taken forward, within a solid critical framework that she works with and believes in. She is quickly able to put her finger on key elements that can be developed further, while ensuring she consistently gives positive feedback on what she thinks works. Even within a short mentorship period she is able to efficiently contribute positively to the process.

I had the pleasure of having Anna-Lises support on the first solo project I am choreographing and the session we had gave me a lot of clarity and awareness to work with. I had just reached a phase where I was not sure into which direction to continue and after the coaching session I had no doubts. I felt being in a safe space to talk and embody my thoughts around the very personal theme of the project and Anna-Lise was guiding me to take the further steps with constructive and creative inputs. I find her coaching sessions extremely enriching and recommend her support to anyone finding their way through the creative process.

Working with Anna-Lise was a very enjoyable experience. We started a couple months before the creation process with two intensive weeks. In every session we went through a certain topic guided by Anna-Lise in a very calm and organized way and afterwards got to play, work and create with the discussed topic. Anna Lise was giving us our own safe space to create, but always being available for questions and little talks. Those talks were very helpful and refreshing. She encouraged us in our own way of working by giving impulses and asking questions that helped us to bring some clear direction into the sometimes so foggy creative process.

During the intensive rehearsal period I felt very supported by Anna-Lise. No matter where I was in the process she found her own role during the rehearsal - having a great sensitivity of what was needed in that moment. I really appreciated her „experienced eyes“ catching details in for example movements or spacing that, when corrected, rounded up the piece.

I really enjoyed receiving feedback from Anna-Lise. It was always very constructive - encouraging me in the things that were working well as well as giving me ideas on how to make things easier for me and my dancers.

With her kind and open minded personality and structured way of working Anna-Lise was able to make this process less intimidating and a whole lot more enjoyable.
